In these interviews we can meet more deeply the members of the recently established YEBN Board for the period 2020-2021. The next member to be introduced is Ela Gralinska, YEBN’s Secretary.
This is what Ela wants to tell us about herself.
I first heard about the YEBN during my master studies. That time I was a biotechnology student and became interested in the mission and the activities organized by the organization. After some time I decided to join the network and become an active member by contributing to the network. Currently I hold the position of secretary of the YEBN.
What, in your opinion, makes YEBN special?
YEBN is a great network for students and young professionals who share their passion for the life sciences. This would not have been possible without the effort of current and past YEBN members and their contribution to this organization. I am happy to be part of the network.
How do you think YEBN can help you develop a successful career?
I think being active in the YEBN is a valuable addition to my daily work in the lab. YEBN is not only a great opportunity for me to meet people from biotech sector and learn more about career possibilities in the industry, but it is also a chance to get some volunteering experience in the international organization and get to know it from inside.
“ YEBN would not have been possible without the effort of current and past members and their contribution to this organization.”
What are your goals for YEBN in 2020-2021 as Secretary?
As a secretary of YEBN I would like to maintain the smooth running of all administrative tasks in our organization, including the process of the membership application. Moreover, together with other members I would like to prepare the grant application forms to be able to receive funding for more international and pilot activities that will be organized by YEBN in the next two years.
In what point are you in your career?
Currently I am a 3rd year PhD student, slowly starting looking forward to the next adventures.
“ As a secretary of YEBN I would like to maintain the smooth running of all administrative tasks in our organization.”
What’s your dream professional career?
For now I have two or three alternative scenarios in my mind, but what connects them and what is also especially important for me is staying close to research.
What do you like/dislike most about your job or what you study?
There are many aspects which I like about my job. The most important ones are the work flexibility, the amount of influence which I have on my work and also an amazing environment. What I don’t like that much is the mobility of scientists, which can be sometimes quite difficult to combine with the personal life.
What do you enjoy doing in your spare time?
What I really enjoy is swimming and sewing. What I’m never tired of is hanging out with friends and reading.
Important advice for others, what have you learned.
Don’t be afraid of asking others for help and advice, you will be surprised how rarely you will hear ‘no’.
