In these interviews we can meet more deeply the members of the recently established YEBN Board for the period 2020-2021. The next member to be introduced is Oriol Bárcenas, YEBN’s Communication Officer.
This is what Oriol wants to tell us about himself.
Hi! I’m Oriol Bárcenas, a 2nd year Biotechnology student! As a degree student I’m willing to enrich my formation as much as possible, and that’s why I wanted to join YEBN! Me and Ismael, the president, study (or studied) at the same university, and he sent a message through a university group regarding YEBN. That’s when I thought I could try joining, and here I am now!
What, in your opinion, makes YEBN special?
YEBN is a very nice place to start yourself in team work and collaboration! All the people I’ve collaborated so far have been amazing and really nice. I feel that it is a very welcoming community and network, a place where you can work hand in hand with great people and have nice moments!
How do you think YEBN can help you develop a successful career?
YEBN has many front lines. In that way, you can develop yourself where you feel more comfortable! Do you like communicating, join the Communication Task Group! Do you like or want to develop interpersonal skills? Try the Networking team! In that sense I feel it’s very open and offers a lot of opportunities for personal development!Also, you can learn lots of Soft Skills!

What are your goals for YEBN in 2020-2021 as the Communication Officer?
I wish YEBN keeps growing and bringing together people to make effective collaborations and develop and help in many amazing new projects!
How do you try to make a change for the better?
I always try to help others that may need help. For you, at the moment, it may not seem like a great thing to do, but sometimes people just need a helping hand or somebody that listens to them. I also try to make the world a bit of a better place with my daily actions and my future career.
In what point are you in your career?
I’m studying a degree in Biotechnology and wish to follow it with a Master’s degree.

What’s your dream professional career?
Right now I have to different things in mind, either focusing on Bioinformatics to develop new treatments or techniques to cure diseases, or taking a more industrial pathway and try to reduce the environmental impact we have. In any case, I want to focus on something that can help as many people as possible.
What do you like/dislike most about your job or what you study?
I guess what I enjoy the most is doing things that require logical thinking and patching knowledge you have to find an effective solution. Having said that, I hate having to memorise. I like to learn, but in a different way.
What do you enjoy doing in your spare time?
I enjoy spending time with my partner and friends! I’m also expanding my culinary knowledge when I have free time. I like to play videogames and reading (although I’ve been reading way less than what I would like lately!). I also enjoy learning new skills.
Important advice for others, what have you learned.
Be free in your decisions and focus on the things that makes you feel happy and accomplished.
